Electricity and gas distribution departments started installing “smart chip” at most of electricity meters. This is meant to determine the real volume consumed by Algerians and foil stealing attempts.

Sonelgaz’s agents started installing the “smart chips” as part of a plan aiming at recovering the company’s money and end anarchy in the sector.

A number of agents told Echorouk the chip contains all the information about clients including meter number, their name and address. It will be used to check meters using a sophisticated device which can read data and consumed volume. Clients who manipulate meters will be introduced into justice.

This measure comes as part of Sonelgaz’s strategy to maintain its financial balance and reduce deficit caused by production high cost and low incomes.

The company’s debts exceeded 65,000 billion DZ. It also looses billions annually due to hacking operations carried out by a large number of clients.
