Canadian engineering group SNC Lavalin Saturday won a contract for the design and execution follow up for the new city of Hassi Messaoud (800 km south of Algiers), according to a statement from the project authority.

  •  US-based Aecom, French IOSIS International and Korea Land Corporate (KLC) were along with SNC Lavalin bidding for the call for tender.
  • The government has launched the $6 billion project to meet the logistical needs of one of Algeria's key energy producing areas.
  • The plan due to be achieved within 8 years is meant to protect urban areas from industrial dangers and respond to the increasing demand from companies located in Hassi Messaoud.
  • "Oil companies operating in the region including the state-owned Sonatrach will participate in funding the construction of their new headquarters at the site planned for the new city," said Algerian Energy Minister Chakib Khelil.
