Dubai's port operator DP World has signed an agreement with Algeria to manage the ports of Algiers and the port of Djen-Djen (east of Algeria), the operator said in a statement published Monday.

  • The Dubai operator will invest an initial 84 million euros ($108.3 million) over 3 to 4 years and commit to further develop and expand the ports where a 50-50 joint venture will hold a 30-year concession, the statement said.
  • It will redevelop the main container terminal at Algiers to expand its capacity.
  • Expanding the new Djen-Djen port in eastern Algeria will take place "according to market demand," DP World said.
  • It indicated that the facility has the potential to handle mega-vessels and become a major trans-shipment hub for the region.
  • DP World is a subsidiary of Dubai World, a holding company owned by the government of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
  • It operates 48 terminals in addition to 13 new developments in the pipeline across 31 countries.
