Tsvangirai calls on E.U to supply emergency relief aid to distressed Zimbabweans
Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai had warned in Strasbourg on Sunday that negotiations with his rival, Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, were in danger of going on "indefinitely."
- The MDC, Tsvangirai's party, had said on Friday that they refused to participate in a unified government with Mugabe until they had resolved their differences over a power-sharing deal, which had originally been proposed on September 15.
- The power-sharing talks are stalled over control of powerful ministries -- particularly home affairs, which oversees the police force that is accused of widespread human rights abuses.
- Tsvangirai also called on the European Union member countries to funnel emergency relief aid to the distressed Zimbabwean population to ward off the haunting specter of starvation and famine in the southern African country.
The political squabbling has dimmed hopes for halting Zimbabwe's economic collapse, with the country buckling under the world's highest rate of inflation, officially at 231 million percent but believed to be much higher.
A leading Zimbabwean medical group said that than hundreds of people had died of cholera so far this year, pointing to the dangerous collapse in the country's ability to provide clean water and sanitation.
