The UN High Commissioner for human rights, South African Navi Pillay called on Tuesday on the Israeli government to lift the stringent blockade imposed on the Palestinian Gaza strip.

  • "Such an arbitrary lockdown is a blatant violation of international laws", she said in a press release.
  • "On account of this long-running blockade, 1.5 million helpless Palestinians have been stripped of their most basic human rights for several months now", she added.
  • Navi Pillay further emphasized that such a repressive move by the Israeli authorities was in total contradiction with international humanitarian laws and regulations.
  • She stressed that such an appalling situation, besetting the Gaza population, was becoming unbearable and should be ended before it takes more woeful proportions.
