Algeria is preparing to respond to the UN report, which raised explicit accusations about the situation of African migrants in Algeria.

The Interior Ministry referred the report to the government, which raised clear fears and explicit warnings of the influx of 35 million people from the Sahel region and beyond the desert, and then move towards North Africa, namely Algeria and southern Europe.

The report pointed to the presence of 7000 smugglers who use 14.000 four-wheel-drive vehicles to transport thousands of migrants daily towards the Algerian and the Libyan borders.

Echorouk learned from government sources that the Prime Minister, Ahmed Ouyahia, asked the Interior and Foreign Ministries to prepare a detailed report on the file of illegal immigrants, and people who displaced to Algeria, following the statement of the Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on the rights of migrants, which was described by Algeria as abusive because of the explicit threats against the government,

According to the sources, the report, which was transmitted to the government, raised explicit concerns and described the influx of immigrants to North Africa and Algeria in particular as the disturbing situation that is expected to know more profound developments because of the current deplorable situation in the countries of the Sahel, which may cause mass movement of the population towards North Africa.

The report explains that these migrants arrive at the Algerian border, thanks to the activity of smugglers, as the statistics of the Interior Ministry said that over 7000 smugglers and 14.000 four-wheel vehicles transport thousands of migrants daily towards the Algerian the Libyan borders.

According to the Interior Ministry’s report, they are arriving in a deteriorating health situation, prompting Algeria to deploy large means to help them.

“Over the past three years, Algeria has ensured medical service to 120,000 migrants with infectious and fatal diseases”, the report said.

In a statement to Echorouk, the head of the operational center in the Interior Ministry and the Migration Center Director, Hassan Kassimi, said that the situation in the Sahel area makes the Sahel population vulnerable to severe water and food crises due to the natural vulnerability of the region like drought, which makes the theory of the movement of a massive population of up to 35 million people from the Sahel and beyond to North Africa, Algeria and southern Europe very likely.

He explained that the phenomenon of growing and the increasing influx of migrants, prompted Algeria to inform the authorities in Germany, Spain and Italy that it addressed and prevented the crossing between 35 to 45.000 migrants from the coast to rise to the north, by means of private financial means.

“The security measures in the south of the country represent the first barriers to the border with Europe. Algeria offers a great service to Europe, because if Algeria tolerates illegal immigration, there will be a dangerous migration flowing towards Europe”.

In a clear response to the Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on the rights of migrants, Felipe González Morales, concerning the status of Nigerian migrants in Algeria, which provoked strong reactions from the Algerian Foreign Ministry, the spokesman said: “Algeria is not responsible for the desperation of migrants, but it remains in solidarity with their suffering through major assistance operations in the border areas”.

“The report is unacceptable because it carried threats against the Algerian government, that were issued by a UN official”.

He implicitly accused the Kingdom of Morocco of being involved in preparing the report, saying: “Algeria does not trade in drugs and does not authorize the circulation of drug money.

“The UN report that Algeria is preparing to respond was prepared in dubious circumstances in order to harm the reputation of Algeria and was based on the testimony of smugglers and delinquents who were deported from Algeria after being convicted by Algerian justice”.

“There is a relationship between Morales and some of the parties that are financing the campaign to defame Algeria by exploiting the file of illegal immigrants and with the complicity of these smugglers. Algeria will not stop condemning these actions”.
