The number of Algerians who applied for the French citizenship at the Center of Algerian Veterans in the French Army, through the submission of various documents of proof reached 70,000 Algerians in the last 18 months.

A representative of the Algerian Veterans Center in the French army, told Echorouk on Sunday, that there is a significant rise in the number of Algerians who applied for French citizenship between January 2, 2017 and June 30, 2018, either for the concerned directly or for their children and grandchildren, by presenting a card of “Veteran in the French army” or what is known as the certificate of the nation’s recognition.

The same source added that the Algerians who asked for obtaining a war veteran card and certificates of recognition called “the testimony of the old resistor” that is received from the consulate for those who settled their situation after the independence of Algeria, and a copy of the individual book that is handed over by the French State for War Veterans that shall be accompanied by the recruits’ status, along with a work certificate from the French administration between 1930 and 1953, and a certificate of military service for young people who were forced to be sent from France to Algeria from 1954 to 1961, and who are now demanding an official document called the “Certificate of Recognition of the Nation”, which leads to a record rise in the number of Algerians who are demanding the French citizenship.

The certificate of recognition of the nation shall be granted in accordance with Article 266-1, as amended by the Decree No. 2001-362, that was published in the French Official Gazette to all those who participated in one of the wars to which France was a party, after a formal request by the concerned party with veterans and war victims provided that the applicant has a Veterans’ Card, citing the increasing number of requests for facilities that are introduced by the French administration in the application for a combat card or a certificate of recognition of the nation since 2004, requiring the person to prove that he has engaged in operations with the French army for 120 days only.

The French authorities have approved a review of granting the Algerian veterans who were forcibly involved in the French army in its war against the Germans and Indochina in 2016, through an increase of between 50 and 100 euros, equivalent to about 10.000 DZD and 15.000 DZD in the national currency.

In a related context, the French Interior Ministry revealed, in its latest figures, that about 400,000 Algerians obtained the French nationality in the period between 1998 and 2017 in different ways, and about 74.000 of them benefited from citizenship after their marriage with French women, along with children and minors who were born in France from non-resident foreign parents, in addition to the naturalization and reintegration.
