A Battle Between Algeria, Morocco In The United Nations’ Corridors
Moroccan Prime Minister, Saad Eddin Othmani, accused Algeria of “taking responsibility for the conflict over Western Sahara and the situation of Saharawi refugees in Tindouf camps”.
Moroccan executive body’s official chooses the United Nations to make a series of vague accusations against Algeria, including harboring the “separatists”, referring to the Polisario leadership and accused Algeria of being responsible of the political, legal and humanitarian crisis in the Sahara issue.
He tried to jump on the facts, saying that his country was occupying the land and acting outside the framework of international legitimacy.
The spokesman called for a “sustainable political solution”, calling on Algeria to take its historical and political responsibility in fabricating, fueling and sustaining this conflict, but he neglected that the solution that satisfies everyone is to hold a referendum for the Sahrawi people’s right to self determination.
On the other hand, the Personal Envoy of the UN General-Secretary, Horst Kohler, and the Foreign Minister, Abdelkader Messahel, discussed the latest developments concerning the preparations for the resumption of the negotiation process between Morocco and the Frente POLISARIO.
A statement by the Foreign Ministry said that Abdelkader Messahel received the UN envoy on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, reiterating Algeria’s commitment to support a peaceful solution to the Sahara issue that guarantees the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination.
The statement added that the FM, Abdelkader Messahel, confirmed, during the meeting that the solution of the Saharawi issue can only be achieved through direct and unconditional negotiations between the parties to the conflict, Morocco and the Polisario Front.
In this context, the Foreign Minister, Messahel reiterated Algeria’s support for the efforts of the UN General-Secretary and his Personal Envoy to Western Sahara.
