Agriculture Minister: “Algeria Will Not Import Barley This Year”

Algeria could dispense with barley imports this year, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Cherif Omari, said.

“Algerian market has enough quantities to meet its needs, and all indications show that the country will dispense with the import of barley”.

“With regard to the production of hard wheat, the minister confirmed that Algeria has guaranteed self-sufficiency for 10 months at a time when the production of soft wheat remains a problem that requires review, as it is the subject of an open workshop at the Ministry of Agriculture, where soft wheat is the base of many food products, especially bread. Algerians throw more than 10 million pieces of bread a day”, he explained.

In another context, the minister said that the doors of grain stores will remain open until September, adding that he gave strict instructions to the grain bureau to continue the process of receiving the product until the last amount that is submitted by the peasant, asserting at the same time to accelerate the process of purging farmers immediately after the product is deposit.

He also asserted that the recently received storage structures give great convenience, including the 300,000 quintals Bouchaggouf warehouse.
