The Trade Minister, Mohamed Benmeradi, revealed Thursday that the list of products prohibited from import will be expanded starting from the month of March following requests by national public enterprises to protect their production from competing goods imported from abroad.
The Minister of Trade said that this decision will be taken after the evaluation process of the decisions taken by the Government meant to reign in the country’s imports.
Mr. Benmeradi announced that a committee would be set up in early 2018, which includes the Ministry of Trade in coordination with the ministerial departments concerned for the purpose of following up and ensuring the smooth implementation of preventive measures designed to safeguard the national economy.
The Committee will be entrusted with examining all requests to be put forth by national companies in their bid to protect the locally-manufactured products from costly imports.
He said that the Government is ready to study all requests submitted to this effect by those national companies capable of fulfilling the needs of the national market.
The trade Minister also pointed out that after a period of three months, the committee will re-evaluate the list of items banned from imports which currently includes 851 products as from next March.
