Algeria Moves To Curb The Forgery Of Moroccan Maps’ Diplomacy

Algeria moved to stop a new Moroccan scheme promoting the “Moroccanness of Western Sahara”, as Rabat adopted a strategy called “map diplomacy in the service of territorial integrity”.

This Moroccan trend comes after former US President Donald Trump’s alleged declaration of his recognition that Western Sahara is Moroccan.

Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs notified the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the strategy implemented by the Kingdom of Morocco, in its endeavour to perpetuate the occupation of Western Sahara, which is viewed by the professor of geography and Moroccan geopolitical expert Moussa al-Maliki.

A correspondence for the Ministry of Higher Education, sent to the presidents of regional seminars for universities, on February 28, which Echorouk reviewed, stated that “According to the letter of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I am honoured to inform you that the Kingdom of Morocco has adopted a strategy that some call maps diplomacy in the service of territorial integrity. This strategy, which was considered by the Moroccan geography professor and geopolitical expert, Moussa Al-Maliki, is to share the maps of the Kingdom of Morocco that include Western Sahara with the rest of the world”.

The correspondence affirms that the new Moroccan move depends on “sharing around the world maps of the Kingdom of Morocco that include Western Sahara, via Internet, urging official and diplomatic institutions to organize demonstrations to display Moroccan maps in many languages and to recruit the Moroccan people and the Moroccan community abroad to denounce every map that does not include the Sahara region during international forums and seminars after US President Donald Trump announced on December 10, 2020, about Moroccan sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara.

“The Kingdom of Morocco is preparing to launch a broad campaign to change paper and digital maps in line with its expansionist ambitions”, the correspondence confirmed.

The Algerian government prepares a plan to counter Moroccan propaganda to legitimize its occupation of Western Sahara, whereby it decided “to take the necessary measures to sensitize the directors of universities and scientific institutions and the entire university family of all its components, especially official and scientific delegations travelling abroad, to request the withdrawal of every document, advertisement or document, whether paper or digital containing maps or data aiming to annex the Western Sahara region to the Moroccan territory during its participation in regional and international seminars, lectures and forums”.
