Algeria: Said Bouteflika, Generals Mediene And Tartag Arrested And Remanded In Custody

Said Bouteflika, Generals Toufik and Tartag were placed under arrest warrant by the investigating judge of the Blida Military Court, the APS announced on Sunday quoting a statement from the Military Court Prosecutor’s Office.
The brother of the former president and the two former heads of the intelligence services are being prosecuted for “dealing a blow to the authority of the Army and plotting against the authority of the State”, according to the same source.
The three defendants were arrested yesterday Saturday by elements of the DGSI, an intelligence service structure.
Video footage, broadcast on public television, showed the three defendants in the courtyard of the military court of Blida, accompanied by security men dressed in civilian clothes, with signs of deep concern and confusion, on the faces of Mediene, Tartag and Said Bouteflika.
So, Said Bouteflika, General Toufik and General Tartag will spend their first night in prison this Sunday.
Arrested yesterday Saturday by DGSI officers, the former president’s brother and the two former heads of the intelligence services were placed in custody on Sunday by an investigating judge of the Blida Military Court, according to a statement from the Blida Military Court of Appeal, published via the official agency.
The military investigating judge at the Blida Military Court ordered Sunday that the three defendants be remanded in custody on charges of “violating army authority” and “conspiring against state authority”, according to the statement.
“For the purposes of the investigation, the Military Prosecutor of the Republic at the Blida Military Court instructed a military investigating judge to initiate the investigation procedure, and after being charged, the latter issued remand warrants against the three defendants,” the statement said.
In accordance with the provisions of article 11, paragraph 3 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and in strict compliance with its provisions,
“The Military Prosecutor General at the Blida Military Court of Appeal informed the national public opinion that a legal action was opened today, May 5, 2019, against the named Athmane Tartag, Mohamed Mediène and Saïd Bouteflika as well as against any person whose involvement is established by the investigation, on charges of “dealing a blow to the authority of the Army and plotting against the authority of the State”.
These serious charges are provided for in articles 284 of the Military Justice Code and 77 and 78 of the Criminal Code. The three defendants face sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
