The Algerian actor Larbi Zekkal is one of the godfathers in Algerian cinema

The Algerian actor Larbi Zekkal passed away Friday in Algiers at the age of 76, announced his relatives.

 

 

    
  • Born on 19 May 1934 in Algiers, the late actor made his debut in Theatre in 1950’s before appearing in most post-Independence cinematographic productions.

  •  He had successful roles in several films about the National Liberation War, including “La Bataille d’Alger” (The Battle of Algiers), “L’opium et le baton” (The Opium and the Stick), “Chronique des années de braise”, (Chronicle of the Burning Years), and many others as “L’honneur de la tribu” (The Honour of the Tribe), “Moissons d’acier” (Harvest of Steel), “De Hollywood à Tamanrasset” (From Hollywood to Tamanrasset) and “Fatima, l’Algerienne de Dakar” (Fatima, the Algerian of Dakar).   

  • The Algerian actor Larbi Zekkal, who died Friday at the age of 76, has been laid to rest Saturday afternoon after Al-Duhr Prayer in the cemetery of Sidi M’hamed (Algiers).

  • Representatives of the world of art and cinema, his friends and members of his family as well as a large crowd of people attended the burial ceremony. In statements to APS, many of his friends paid tribute to the late actor.

  • “His death is a great loss for the Algerian cinema, and it’s impossible to replace such a high calibre as Zekkal. I’m still in a state of shock,” said the actor Madani Namoun.
