Algerian-Turkish Agreement For Permanent Coordination On Libyan Crisis

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, pointed on Sunday in Algiers, to a “total convergence” between Algeria and Turkey on the need to work together to implement the conclusions of the Berlin Conference on the Libyan crisis.

Regarding the situation in the region, “a total convergence exists between us and Turkey, a brotherly country, on the need to work together, with the help of Allah Almighty, to implement the conclusions of the Berlin Conference,” Mr. Tebboune said at a press conference held jointly with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the end of their meeting.

Algeria and Turkey “are closely following the situation in Libya,” he added.

Held last Sunday under the aegis of the UN and with the participation of 11 countries including Algeria, the Berlin conference on the Libyan crisis highlighted the fundamental principles for the preservation of peace and stability in Libya, including the strengthening of inter-Libyan political understanding as an effective framework for the resolution of the crisis.

In this regard, Algeria offered to host the dialogue between the Libyan brothers.

At the bilateral level, President Tebboune said he had agreed with his Turkish counterpart to shore up “very soon” the volume of trade between the two countries to more than five (5) billion dollars, hailing Turkey’s position as “today, one of the major economic powers outside the European Union (…) which has built its economy on SMEs”.

The President of the Republic affirmed that he had agreed with President Erdogan to devote a “daily exchange” between Algerian ministers and their Turkish counterparts, particularly the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, to “leave no room for any misunderstanding”.

The President of the Republic also announced that he has agreed to Turkey’s acquisition of land for the construction of a new Turkish embassy headquarters in Algeria, and also mentioned the opening of a Turkish Cultural Centre in Algeria and an Algerian Cultural Centre in Turkey.

President Tebboune also said he had accepted President Erdogan’s invitation to visit Turkey.

The Turkish President stressed for his part the imperious need “not to allow Libya to be turned into an arena for terrorist organizations and war barons”.

He pointed out that Turkey “will continue to stay alongside its Libyan brothers with all its available capabilities”.

He added: “We will continue to work to stop the bloodshed in Libya”.

The Turkish President arrived on Sunday in Algiers for a two-day friendly and working visit at the invitation of President Tebboune.
