Citizens’ Concern: Why Authorities Want To import Meat From Europe And Ignore The Meat Of Sudan?

The issue of the projected import of European meat meant to face up to the shortage and fill the deficit that may accompany the period of the holy month of fasting of Ramadhan, which is at our doors, has stirred a lot of controversy among many citizens who did not digest the way with which the authorities are handling such imports notably as many of them feel concerned about the “halal” nature of these cattle meat due to be imported from several European countries especially for large consumption during the upcoming month of Ramadhan.
After the countries of Asia, which have been the main source of the Algerian market in terms of frozen meat especially during Ramadhan, numerous citizens are concerned about European meat and specifically the imported French and Spanish cattle meat by casting serious doubts over its “Halal” brand and the conditions of slaughter.
In this connection, European economic operators paid a business visit to Algeria on Wednesday to promote imported European beef.
The delegation of European operators came mainly from France. The visit to Algeria aimed to “explore the Algerian market and discuss business opportunities with Algerian professionals in the beef sector,” announced the organizers in a statement.
“Algeria represents a great potential for beef, an ingredient that remains indispensable in Algerian gastronomy. However, the self-sufficiency rate for beef in the local market is 55%.
Algeria has only 2 million head of cattle and 25 million heads of sheep, a quantity below the needs of the population in a country with over 40 million inhabitants,” said the relevant program supported by the European Union.
“It is in this context that European beef will intervene to offer the Algerian consumer the best quality/price ratio, by taking advantage of the geographical proximity between Europe and Algeria to reduce costs,” it added.
It also stated that “quality” European cattle meat is produced according to a natural breeding method and has an “exemplary traceability, obligatory throughout Europe”.
