Fatma Ben Sassi: “We Have Complaints From Harkis’ Sons, Grandsons In Algeria”
Contacts between some Harkis in France and their counterparts in Algeria are conducted in order to defend their rights, Head of the Harkis and Human Rights Association, Fatma Ben Sassi, said.
“I received a call from Algeria saying: “We are the sons and grandsons of Harkis. We live in a situation of discrimination in Algeria. Do something for us.” In what appeared to be a distress, as portrayed by the French citizen of Algerian origin, Fatma Ben Sassi.
Ben Sassi who is originated from the region of Cherchal, called on the French state to open the archives to the historians and demanded “to listen to the witnesses in order to tell the truth and fairness of this category of Algerians, who decided one day to choose the wrong camp during the war that Algeria fought against France in order to gain independence.
According to Ben Sassi, the French state is called upon to reconsider the position of the classic ideological Harkis, and to review it in a way that is placed in a war context.
The case of Harkis has come back to the forefront since the French President, Emmanuel Macron, decided to honor this category, which has continued in recent weeks, the latest of which was issued by the French Defense Minister, Geneviéve Darieussecq, on Teusay.
Ben Sassi expressed surprise at her inability as a dynamic daughter to visit the country where her father and grandparents were born and took advantage of the opportunity to defend this group after she decided to move to the French camp in time of war.
President of the Harkis Association, a doctor of history, said that she “deplores the war” and “condemns violence”.
She acknowledged the lack of balance in the liberation war between the huge means that were held by the colonial army and the primitive weapons that were used for the laucnh of the November Revolution.
