Illegal Immigration: Algerian Coast Guards Intercept, Rescue 500 People

The National Defense Ministry announced that it foiled an attempt by 485 people to migrate illegally on boats to Europe and that 10 others have sunk at sea.

According to the ministry’s statement; “In continuation of the efforts made by our naval forces to curb the phenomenon of illegal immigration, the coast guard units were able, from 15 to 19 September 2020, through 42 separate operations in our territorial waters, to intercept and rescue 485 people who tried to migrate illegally. They were taken to care centres by the competent authorities, while the bodies of 10 illegal immigrants were recovered after they drowned because their boats capsized.

The defence Ministry statement explained; “It should be noted that the operations carried out by search and rescue boats were distributed as follows:

– 22 operations at the western seafront during which 255 illegal immigrants were intercepted and rescued.

– 19 operations on the eastern seafront during which 227 illegal immigrants were intercepted and rescued.

– 03 illegal immigrants were intercepted and rescued at the central seafront.

“These interventions reflect the efforts made by our naval forces in the framework of carrying out their various missions at sea, especially the humanitarian operations, and preserving the safety of citizens, the statement added.
