“The gang is still pervasive and its rooting out takes years,” said former president Liamine Zeroual, according to one of the military pensioners’ symbols, Ammar al-Birri, coordinator of the National Coordinator for Army Retirees.
The advice by the former president to “Al Birri” came during a meeting between the two men, it was at the request of the coordinator of the army pensioners, hoping to prompt Mr Zeroual to mediate with the higher authorities in the country, so as to make them respond to the demands of retirees of the army, who demand a hike in their pensions, and the settling of the rights of the badly injured in the war waged against the plague of terrorism in the nineties .
According to a video of the retired army coordinator posted on YouTube, Al Birri explained that Zeroual told him: “They demanded your rights in a peaceful manner, and you have to put Algeria above all else, this is our country and we have no other country apart from Algeria”.
“Al Birri” explained that Zeroual is in contact with the higher authorities of the country, and promised his guest to mediate in order to achieve the demands of this broad category, which remains among the few groups whose grievances haven’t been fulfilled in the desired manner, according to them.
“The symbols of the nefarious gang are in jail, but this gang is still to be totally rooted,”, “It must take time to uproot it, because it has lasted for more than 20 years,” Mr Zeroual said in his response to the army retirees’ coordinator.
