The Tindouf-Zouerate Road Will Positively Transform The Entire Region

The completion of the strategic road between Tindouf and Zouerate (southwestern Algeria) will change the features of the entire region, announcing the signing, soon, of the agreement establishing the “bilateral border committee” between the two countries, Algeria’s Ambassador to Mauritania, Noureddine Khandoudi, said.

Khandoudi asserted in an interview with the Mauritanian News Agency that “the creation of the joint border crossing and its official launch in August 2018 is a qualitative step in the relations between the two brotherly countries.

“This important event will be followed by the signing, soon, of the agreement establishing the bilateral border commission. This committee will deal with economic, cultural and security cooperation in the common border areas. Awaiting the decisive step for completing the strategic road between Tindouf and Zouerate (about 900 km), which will change the features of the entire region through its development and ending its isolation, and it will be a strong push for commercial, economic, cultural and the human exchange between the two brotherly peoples”, he added.

“The opening of the common borders and the establishment of the two border posts “PK 75” on the Mauritanian side and “Martyr Mostefa Ben Boulaid” on the Algerian side enabled hundreds of commercial trucks to cross in both directions, in addition to thousands of travellers of different nationalities”.

“As I talk about the borders between our two countries, I deeply regret not organizing the “Magar Festival” in Zouerat during 2020, as was expected, and this is due to the Corona pandemic, as everyone knows, it is considered one of the best forms of human, commercial and cultural communication between our two peoples in general, and between the inhabitants of the northern Mauritanian region and southwestern Algeria in particular. It was decided to revive the festival, which was suspended in 1975, to add this important dimension to our relationships and consolidate them”.

“As for the strategic and geopolitical side, the construction of the road between the Algerian border and Zouerate will make Mauritania in the heart of the portico of Cairo-Dakar and Algiers-Dakar. This last gallery, which falls within the merger plans of the African Union, is currently in the process of being completed. After completing the Nouakchott-Rousseau road, the Rousseau Bridge on the Senegal River will start”.

“The completion of this road will also enable Mauritania to communicate by land with three Maghreb countries, namely Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. If we look at the map after completing this land road, the connection between the four Maghreb countries will highlight the features of building an integrated Arab Maghreb economically, commercially, humanly and culturally”.
