Western Sahara Issue: The Russian-Algerian Identical Positions

The Russian-Algerian position is identical concerning Western Sahara’s file, especially what concerns the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, the Russian Ambassador to Algeria, Igor Belyayev, said on Tuesday in an interview with Algeria’s International Radio.

“Western Sahara’s file was recently discussed in detail during a phone call between the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergueï Lavrov, and his Algerian counterpart Sabri Boukadoum. I think there is a similarity in the Russian-Algerian position regarding the Western Sahara issue, he added.

The Russian diplomat asserted that both Russia and Algeria call on the parties to the conflict “to exercise restraint and abide by the ceasefire agreement that was signed between the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco in 1991”.

Russia’s representative in Algeria renewed his country’s position on the “right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination” by organizing a free and fair referendum, “following the provisions of international resolutions issued by the United Nations General Assembly and the UN Security Council”.

Igor Belyayev expressed his hope that “the Sahrawi people will be able to reach a peaceful agreement that ends the crisis,” explaining that “the only way to solve the conflict is through resurrecting the path of negotiations,” calling in the context the two parties to the conflict (Polisario and Morocco) “to resume the peace negotiations between them at the earliest opportunity”.

The Russian diplomat called on the United Nations to “expedite the appointment of a special envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Western Sahara” to succeed Horst Köehler, who resigned in May 2019, to resume the political process as well”.
