2025… The Plight Of The Moroccan People Deepens Amidst Escalating Crises
Moroccan media reports, with the beginning of the new year, highlighted the disasters and tragedies that the country experienced during 2025, which deepened the plight of the Moroccan people, leading to widespread protests amidst expectations of an expanding circle of “overwhelming anger” with the “escalation of crises” afflicting the Kingdom.
In a tone of mockery and sarcasm, these reports addressed what was described as “achievements” and “miracles” promoted by both the head of government and its official spokesperson, without the Moroccan people finding any trace of them in reality, which put the state in confrontation with the street, which “is now being attempted to be tamed with arrests and sentences.”
In the same context, many accumulated disappointments, successive setbacks, and resounding scandals were addressed, which the flawed public policies failed to contain amidst excessive attention to accumulating wealth and circumventing the demands of the people instead of dealing with them responsibly.
The rampant corruption and the escalating political deadlock threatening the future of the country were also noted, after the level of trust in political and trade union action, official discourse, and the institutions of the Makhzen state reached an all-time low. The country – media headlines added – “suffers from a crisis with more than one head and title.”
It highlighted that the crisis in the country has become undeniable, far from playing with numbers and wooden language, which are no longer sufficient to plug the holes threatening the country’s ship in various sectors.
Perhaps the most dangerous threat to Morocco today, in addition to corruption, is the debts in which the country is drowning and the increasing taxes that burden citizens, especially since the government is striving more and more to force Moroccans to bear the burden of feeding the budget and the weight of saving institutions burdened by corruption and mismanagement, while continuing to pardon money smugglers and entrench privileges, rent-seeking, and monopolies.
The same reports concluded that the Moroccan people are entering the new year amidst warnings of decisions that will increase their plight after the country drowned in debt, the state treasury suffered, and became hostage to international financial institutions with a new structural adjustment.
In this context, the Makhzen regime continues to demolish citizens’ homes and trample on their dignity in the midst of winter, while victims of natural disasters suffer greatly, with new deaths recorded due to the bitter cold, and the lack of care for residents of remote areas, who were forced to carry their sick on their shoulders and on animals.
In this regard, the city of “Bouskoura” south of Casablanca is witnessing sudden demolition decisions for the homes of many residents, without prior notice, or the provision of alternative housing, or fair compensation, even though some residents have lived in these homes for more than 50 years.
According to local media reports, public authorities neither care about the social situation of citizens, nor about their needs, amidst continuous rainfall, snow, and floods that led to the closure of many roads.
The suffering of citizens in “forgotten Morocco” continues, according to these residents, as many social media pages documented tragic images of families trapped by snow, and citizens carrying their sick on their shoulders and on animals, in addition to students deprived of school due to overflowing valleys and the difficulty of walking in the mud.
