A production Unit For Germany’s Opel Confirms The Attractiveness Of Cars In Algeria.

The German car brand Opel, a subsidiary of the global Stellantis group, announced its selection of Algeria to launch a new production plant outside the European continent. This move represents a significant expansion of the company’s international presence, particularly in the Middle East and Africa region, and reflects the growing attractiveness of the automotive industry in Algeria.

In this context, Opel CEO Florian Huettl stated in a post on his official LinkedIn account that Algeria has been a focus of the company’s attention for the past two years. He noted that deepening partnerships at this level has resulted in this new step: the establishment of a production unit dedicated to meeting the needs of Algerian customers and complementing Opel’s existing European manufacturing network.

Mr. Huettl added that he had the honor of attending a working session in Algeria with Mr. Samir Cherfane, Chief Operating Officer for the Middle East and Africa region and a member of the group’s executive committee. Discussions focused on developing the new site and integrating additional Opel car models into the local industrial ecosystem.

The German brand official affirmed that this decision reflects Opel’s strategic direction and marks a significant milestone for the company, for Algeria, and for Stellantis’ activities in the Middle East and Africa region.

He pointed out that local production, industrial integration, and long-term investment are essential factors for sustainable growth, whether for customers, partners, or local industry. He emphasized Opel’s commitment to delivering the distinguished quality of German engineering, proudly produced in Algeria.

Mr. Huettl stated that the company will continue to strengthen and expand the industrial ecosystem around its cooperation with Algeria, to create sustainable value for the local market and the wider region.

The Opel CEO concluded his remarks by saying that this step represents an exciting phase and a clear indicator of the company’s ambition for the future of cars in Algeria and the region.

According to sources close to the matter who spoke to “Echorouk”, this facility is a direct project of Opel itself, not of the parent group Stellantis. This means, almost certainly, that investments in this plant will be made directly by the German brand, unlike what happened at the Tafraoui unit for the Italian brand, where an initial investment exceeding 200 million euros was made by the Stellantis group, in addition to extra financial envelopes related to the expansion of structures and painting.

For his part, Mr. Samir Cherfane, Chief Operating Officer for the Middle East and Africa at the Stellantis group, stated in a post on his official social media accounts that German Opel has indeed chosen Algeria to launch a new production plant outside the European continent. He considered this step a significant strategic phase for the brand, the Algerian market, and the Middle East and Africa region.

Mr. Cherfane noted his attendance at a working session in Algeria with Florian Huettl, Opel’s CEO, where the shared ambition to implement the project and effectively contribute to the development of the national automotive industry through local production, industrial integration, and long-term investment was emphasized.

The spokesperson clarified that this new plant will be consistent with the “made in the region, for the region” principle and will complement the company’s European manufacturing network, allowing it to meet the needs of Algerian and regional customers while maintaining the renowned quality of German engineering.

The member of the Stellantis group’s executive committee concluded his post by affirming that the company will continue to strengthen and expand the local industrial ecosystem, creating new opportunities for customers, partners, and the Algerian industry, reflecting Opel’s ambition for a sustainable and strong future in the region.
