According to US military sources, the Al Qaeda terror group in Iraq has covertly transferred millions of dollars to Algeria and other Arab countries as a result of the stranglehold imposed by the US and Iraqi forces on its beleaguered elements in northern Iraq as well as in and around the capital Baghdad.

A US military commander said that several members of the Al Qaeda terrorist organization had recently fled the country with millions of dollars for neighbouring countries including Syria .
He added that intelligence investigations had shown that about 17 million dollars had been amassed by Al Qaeda following a spate of terror activities carried out in several towns and cities of Iraq notably racketeering, coercive levies of war taxes and ransoms wrenched from abductions.
The US military officer indicated that the Pentagon had alerted the countries concerned, including Algeria, to heed this new development urging them to monitor closely all shady money transfers, through their local banks, made by undercover elements of Al Qaeda terror group across the Arab world.
