Algeria and Tunisia urge UN Security Council to safeguard Libya’s national unity

Informed sources told “Echorouk” that the vexed Libya file was the focus of discussions during the recent visit paid by the Head of Government of Tunisia to Algeria.

The Libyan crisis can be resolved through proper diplomatic channels with the direct involvement of all parties at issue to ensure the country’s unity and to thwart schemings hatched by some shadowy foreign circles aimed at slicing Libyan territory into two parts: an oil-rich one controlled by the UN and the other one under the sway of Western nations.

For this purpose, all feuding parties concerned should be duly consulted for the sake of peace so as to safeguard the unity of Libya and to back up the UN settlement plan and at the same time fight efficiently against the evil forces of “Daesh”.

According to the same sources, Algeria and Tunisia have agreed to urge the permanent members of the UN Security Council and the major powers to preserve the national unity and territorial integrity of Libya.

In this line, academic Ouarfali Rajab, said in a statement to “Echorouk” that since independence, Libya has been divided into three region including Tripoli, Cyrenaica and Fezzan, and 70% of oil reserves are located in Cyrenaica.

“It is feared that a damaging partition of this country could be in the making as it was woefully done in Sudan … because of the country’s large oil reserves in the background”, he argued.

This dreaded partition plan of Libya is supported by some ill-advised Gulf countries which covertly strive to destabilize the Maghreb countries, through the effects of the so-called “dominoes theory”, with on prime focus Algeria.

Why Algeria is targeted precisely… because it adamantly refused to participate in the Arab military coalition to intervene in Yemen.

All in all, this joint Algerian-Tunisian diplomatic initiative is commendable in many respects, as it is designed to preserve the cohesion and territorial unity of Libya because this country’s stability guarantees as well the stability of all neighboring states.
