The President of the Arab Parliamentary Union (APU) Mr. Ibrahim Boughali stressed Monday in Cairo the need to immunize Arab countries from the repercussions of major power conflicts by strengthening their partnerships in a way that preserves their vital interests.

In his speech during the 36th session of the Executive Committee of the Arab Parliamentary Union (APU), Mr. Boughali highlighted “the need to immunize Arab countries from the repercussions of major power conflicts,” calling for “strengthening their regional and international partnerships in a way that preserves their interests and working to achieve Arab economic integration as a strategic step to ensure independence and prosperity,” said a statement from the People’s National Assembly (ANP). He added that Arab parliamentarians “are called upon to revive joint action in various spaces, especially with counterparts and partners in Asia, Africa and Latin America, in order to sensitize parliamentarians around the world to the issues of the region, at the forefront of which is the cause of the Palestinian people.”

“The armed conflicts and economic and social crises facing the Arab region require the development of clear strategies that focus on strengthening Arab national security and activating Arab parliamentary cooperation mechanisms to build a future in which social justice and sustainable development are realized,” he said.

He also mentioned the untold suffering of the Palestinian people as “the first challenge,” stressing that “Arab countries have no choice but to stand firmly against attempts to impose a fait accompli on the historic land of Palestine and to uphold the inalienable rights of its people, especially the establishment of their independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.”

Regarding the recent developments in Syria, Mr. Boughali emphasized “absolute support for the sovereignty and unity of this Arab country,” holding the United Nations “responsible for ensuring peace in the region by stopping the Zionist entity’s repeated violations of international law and the UN Charter,” calling on it to “ensure full respect for the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.”

At the end of his speech, he called on the members of the Arab Parliamentary Union to “invest in bilateral and multilateral relations, develop the institutional structure of the Union and expand the scope of its concerns to include development issues and promote the principles of governance and economic integration so that Arab parliamentarians contribute concretely to building a prosperous future for the peoples of the region.”
