Technical commission in charge of constitutional amendment will be set up next week presided by Algerian former foreign affairs minister Mohamed Bedjaoui and former president of the Constitutional Council, according to corroborating sources. Both of them were entrusted by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika with holding talks to determine the composition of this commission.

President Bouteflika decided in favour of a comprehensive amendment of 1996’s Constitution, said the same sources.

The constitutional amendment project is in concretisation phase especially supporters of this option have been more and more.

The National Liberation Front (FLN) was the first political party which had the initiative to submit this demand before presenting its draft bill on the president’s next constitution.

Later, this demand was adopted by other parties and organisations including the National Rally for Democracy (RND) and Movement for the Society of Peace (MSP).

The announcement on the constitutional amendment commission comes with preparations started by the Presidential Alliance’s parties (FLN, RND and MSP) for their congresses.

The RND decided on Thursday to postpone its congress until the end of June while the MSP is expected to hold its congress in the end of the current month. For its part, the FLN decided to fix the date of its congress whenever the president announces the constitutional amendment.
