Algeria has solar energy enough to supply world economy, says Earth Policy Institute founder

Earth Policy Institute‘s founder Lester R. Brown said Algeria has a great solar energy and the sustainable energy capacity is huge. “Algeria has a solar energy sufficient to supply the world economy.”

  • Brown also said Texas which was the most important oil producer in the last century in the US is now the biggest generator for wind energy. “China has sufficient wind energy capacities to multiply its current energy consumption to 18 times in future.”
  •
  • In a presentation entitled ‘sustainable energy solutions for humanity and earth’, the Institute’s founder believes that Desertec is an ambitious project as it will contribute in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
  •
  • He added that Desertec is meant to exploit solar energy in North Africa and integrate it in the power network in North Africa and Europe. It also includes European wind parks.
  •
  • The American expert talked about people against solar electricity projects as they believe that the prices of this energy production are high. He also spoke about the negative impact of the use of carbon which is the biggest polluter compared with sustainable energy including solar energy.
  •
  • General Director of Sonelgaz Nourredine Bouterfa said Desertec project has partisans and opponents in Algeria. “The idea is originally Algerian but it faces competition from the Mediterranean Solar Plan led by France. He expects that the project would enable to produce 20,000 mega watt of energy by 2020. “This energy will be intended to countries in North Africa, the Middle East and Europe.”
