Algeria new government plans constitutional amendment and anticipated legislative elections
Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal will hold a cabinet meeting early this week following a government reshuffle. Ministers will discuss an action plan as part of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s fourth term program, Echorouk has learnt.
Bouteflika’s electoral program was based on five main axes: stability, democracy, economy, national solidarity and human resources.
According to the same sources, the government’s action plan also focused on justice independence, countering corruption, money laundering and terrorism funding.
The new cabinet will also pass the constitutional amendment before the end of the year and prepare legislative elections to redraw the political map at Parliament before next year’s spring.
The action plan will be submitted to Parliament after discussion.
Article 79 of the Constitution entrusts the Prime Minister the mission of implementing the president’s program, coordinating the government’s actions, fixing the action plan and presenting it to ministers.
Article 80 stipulates that the action plan is submitted to the People’s National Assembly for approval then to the Council of the Nation.
