Algeria : Protracted veterinarians' strike trigger anarchical situation on meat and fish market

According to a spokesman of the national veterinarians' Trade Union, the open-ended strike waged by veterinary surgeons across the country, has sparked off a genuine anarchy on the meat and fish markets with big tradesmen selling huge amounts of these animal products without the prior health certification.

Doctor Samir Hamza said that the Algerian veterinarians’ work stoppage, which is entering its 10th day, had not prevented certain venal tradesman to sell tonnes of these animal products without going through the required sanitary controls.

 

 

He added that the same of such products including fresh and frozen meat, poultry and fish without the veterinary surgeons’ green-light could have nefarious repercussions on the consumers’ health.

He also pointed out that even milk for infants and children had been commercialized in the past few days without the prior health controls.

 

 

These sort of fraudulent and senseless trading practises should be firmly repressed by the law, he stressed.

He finally added that the vets’ would continue their strike until the fulfilment of their legitimate salary claims.
