Algeria has granted humanitarian aid of 18 tonnes, consisting mainly of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment for health facilities located in the Libyan municipalities of Ghat and Oubari, bordering the south-eastern province of Illizi, a statement from the Foreign affairs Ministry announced on Thursday.

In a reaction, the latter, who are grappling with enormous difficulties in meeting the needs of populations affected by the ongoing fratricidal clashes in Libya, expressed their strong appreciation and their thanks to Algeria for this new gesture of solidarity and fraternity as part of humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of civilians, the main victims of the unabated crisis now besetting this neighbouring Maghrebian country.

This new relief aid is in response to emergency assistance calls made by the UN, and in the context of similar operations, that Algeria has already undertaken in the recent past to fulfill the basic needs these hapless populations facing turmoil and insecurity.

Moreover, Algeria which is following with concern the deteriorating humanitarian and health situation in Libya, called on the Libyan parties at issue to rise to the level of their historical responsibilities and finalize the political solution within the framework of the political process led by the UN to permanently restore peace, security and stability across Libyan territory.

Algeria’s well-meaning position was reiterated on the occasion of the recent visit paid to Algiers by Mr Martin Kobler, Representative of the UN Secretary General for Libya.

Furthermore, Algeria has once again renewed its firm support for the urgency of establishing a national unity government in Tripoli able to meet the immediate needs of the brotherly Libyan people.
