Algeria urges Libyan authorities to assure security for the Algerian diplomats on its territory

The Algerian authorities have yesterday called on their Libyan counterparts to assure security for the Algerian embassy and consulate in Libya according to the international treaties in this field.

  • The Algerian Foreign Ministry has, in this respect, vehemently denounced the attack that targeted the Algerian embassy in Libya and expressed its utmost disappointment following the sad developments in the wake of the defeat of the Libyan football squad in the return qualifying match counting for the 2013 African Cup of Nations.
  • Some overzealous individuals vandalized the Algerian embassy in Tripoli and burnt its flag.
  • In a communiqué released to the press, the Algerian FM mouthpiece Ammar Bekhani said” We feel sorry about the events that happened the day before yesterday in Tripoli in the wake of the match that opposed the Algerian football squad and their Libyan counterparts”.
  • The spokesman of the Ministry has indicated that the fabricated events will not affect the historical diplomatic ties between the two brotherly states”. Nonetheless, he called on the Libyan authorities to assure the Algerian diplomatic representations in this country.
  • According to witnesses, a group of a young Libyans besieged the Algerian embassy Sunday late at night and one pf them, as shown on video posted on the internet, climbed the wall put the Algerian flag down, torn and burnt it amid a hilarious crowd chanting slogans against Algeria .
  • This attack raises concern over the security of the Algerian diplomats and nationals living there and the capacity of the Libyan authorities to assure safety for foreign nationals on spot.
  • This attack is the second of its kind against the Algerian embassy after the one that occurred in summer 2011 where individuals ransacked and looted it. Libyan lawyers have, then, denounced the act considering it an isolated one.
  • To recall, the Libyan Foreign Minister has officially apologized to the UD Deputy Secretary of State during his visit to Tripoli in the wake of the killing of the US ambassador to Libya by armed individuals.
