Algeria yielded to the will of the superpowers over Mali, military experts say

Several politicians and experts consider the decision made by the Algerian authorities to follow in the footsteps of the advocates of a military action to end the crisis in Mali, was due to the fact that the super powers are bracing for this option.

  • The former minister of communication and ambassador to Spain Abdelaziz Rehabi has indicated that Algeria has finally realized that its position will not stand before the ‘big four”, US, France, Russia and China.
  • “ Algeria doesn’t posses the required influence and tools that allow it to stress its standpoint over the issue” , he said.
  • The former ambassador went on saying that the internationalization of the Malian crisis is a matter of time since the appointment of a UN representative in the Sahel region, noting that the Algerian role will be limited to “ Protecting its territorial integrity and reducing the crisis fallouts including the proliferation of weapons and the expansion of the terrorist activities towards its southern borders”.
  • He expressed astonishment following the declarations made the day before yesterday by the French interior minister Manuel Valls concerning the concordance of views between Algeria and France over the Malian crisis. Rehabi said that Algeria gives priority to a diplomatic solution while France advocates a military action to end the crisis in Mali.
  • Rehabi has indicated that the western countries have imposed their logic in their quality of superpowers amid a total indifference of Russia and China and the marginalization of the Sahel region by Algeria saying “President Bouteflika visited seven times France but has never been to Mali”.
  • The military expert Ahmed Adhimi has indicated that the Algerian U-Turn over the issue has become insignificant after the request made by the Malian authorities to the UN, calling for a military intervention to dislodge the terrorist groups that hold sway on its northern territories since lat spring.
  • The retired military officer has indicated that Algeria is confronted to big challenges on account of the proximity of the conflict to its borders with Mali that stretch 1300 KM long. “ Crisis have no borders and its easy to set a date for the outbreak of a war but one never can d it for its termination” , he said .
