Algerian Export Revenues From Sugar, Pastries and Home Appliances Reach $700M
The decisions taken by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during the awards ceremony for the best exporters in 2024, will allow approximately $700 million to be pumped by Algerian exports outside of hydrocarbons within one year, Vice President of the National Association of Algerian Exporters, Ali Bey Nasri, said in a statement to Echorouk.
This amount is divided between $600 million for sugar and pastries and more than $60 million for home electrical equipment spare parts, i.e. DZD 95 billion.
Nasri explained that lifting the freeze on the export of pastries and sugar, whose production exceeds national needs, will allow saving $600 million, stressing that banning the export of these two products by order of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in 2022 for reasons related to the supply of the national market, the ban was lifted on these two products after calls by exporters, pending the lift on oil, which has not yet achieved the expected surplus.
Nevertheless, Nasri confirmed that allowing the export of spare parts for home electrical equipment within the framework of after-sales services by Algerian dealers will raise Algeria’s exports of home electrical equipment to $120 million instead of $60 million, adding that Algeria will also gain new markets that will allow the injection of greater revenues in hard currency during the next phase “in the future, especially since many markets had postponed the import of Algerian home electrical products due to the absence of after-sales services, it is expected that these exports will open again to many countries”.
The new products in the list of materials intended for export abroad during the next stage will primarily include ceramics, which are characterized by high quality and qualified to enter various global markets.
Nasri believes that the products in the building, public works and contracting sectors have achieved self-sufficiency in the national market, and are strongly recommended for export during the next stage.
“The process will include ceramics and tiles in addition to iron and cement, which have achieved a significant proportion of exports, while vegetables, fruits, drinks, food, household electrical appliances, glass, wheels, “Deglet Nour,” the famous Algerian dates, phosphates and fertilizers will join the exports. The number of exporters today outside of fuels is equivalent to 2000 after it was approximately 1600 companies in 2023 and 1300 in 2021,” he added.
According to Nasri, the encouragement provided by the higher authorities today for export and the stimulating statements of the President of the Republic have prompted Algerian companies to engage in new experiences, out of their belief in the importance of pumping hard currency into the Algerian treasury and marketing the Algerian product to various countries of the world, considering that the current goal is to achieve exports outside hydrocarbons by reaching $10 billion, a figure that the speaker expected could be reached thanks to the facilities recently approved by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Last Thursday in Algiers, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, oversaw the honouring of nine institutions within the framework of the President’s Award for the Best Algerian Exporter of 2023, in appreciation of their efforts to diversify and develop Algerian exports outside the hydrocarbons sector. The honouring ceremony was held at the International Conference Center, Abdelatif Rahal, in the presence of senior state officials, members of the government, representatives of professional associations, and public and private institutions.
