Algerian-Indian Forum Reshapes Investment Landscape in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Algeria seeks to leverage India’s advanced expertise in pharmaceutical production, particularly in the manufacturing of vitamins, nutritional supplements, and generic drugs.

This new approach focuses on technology transfer and localising the industry, rather than relying solely on imports. Leading Indian companies in this sector are eager to enter the Algerian market, viewing it as a promising and stable market and a strategic gateway to African and Mediterranean markets. They are capitalising on Algeria’s geographic location, the size of domestic demand, and a regulatory framework that now encourages production partnerships and value-added direct investments.

In this context, Algeria will host the Indian-Algerian Business Forum for the Pharmaceutical Industry and B2B meetings at the Algiers Sheraton Hotel on Thursday, January 15, 2026. This event is part of an official visit by a delegation representing over forty Indian companies active in the pharmaceutical industry and drug manufacturing, to explore partnership and investment opportunities with Algerian businesses.

This forum serves as the practical and organisational framework for this visit, providing a direct platform for establishing business relationships between business leaders from both countries. This aligns with Algeria’s focus on strengthening local pharmaceutical production, localising the industry, and increasing industrial integration rates, while India seeks to expand its presence in African and Mediterranean markets through Algeria.

India is among the world’s largest pharmaceutical producers, ranking highly in the manufacture of generic drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Its products cover more than 200 international markets, giving it a strong competitive edge in terms of cost, volume, and technology. However, according to the new regulatory and investment framework, entering the Algerian market requires partnership and technology transfer rather than simply exporting. This aligns with Algeria’s strategy to reduce imports and build a sustainable national pharmaceutical industry.

The forum’s program, reviewed by Echorouk, includes showcasing cooperation opportunities across a wide range of sectors, including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), medical devices, surgical supplies, wound care products, and various forms of ready-made medications such as oral liquids, oral dosages, tablets, and capsules. It also encompasses nutritional supplements, veterinary products, medical cosmetics and skincare products, vitamins, probiotics, and injectables.

This visit falls within the framework of strengthening economic cooperation between Algeria and India, a point emphasised during the meeting between the Director General of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency, Omar Rekkache, and the Ambassador of the Republic of India to Algeria, Swati Vijay Kulkarni. During the meeting, they agreed to prioritise value-added sectors, particularly the pharmaceutical industry and drug manufacturing.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed the current status of Indian projects operating in Algeria, as well as the interest of leading global pharmaceutical companies, including Tenshi, in entering the Algerian market through direct investment projects or industrial partnerships.

Omar Rekkache affirmed that the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency will dedicate all its resources to ensuring the success of this forum and the accompanying visit, aiming to produce tangible results and partnership agreements that will support technology transfer, develop the local industrial sector, and strengthen pharmaceutical security in Algeria.

The Indian-Algerian Pharmaceutical Business Forum reflects the shift from the logic of traditional trade relations to production partnerships imposed by regulation and the market, at a time when Algeria seeks to establish its position as a regional pharmaceutical industrial hub, benefiting from Indian expertise and a promising domestic market.
