Algeria's food import bill rose by 50 % in 2007
Algeria's food import bill rose 50 percent to $4.5 billion in 2007, from $3 billion in 2006, a senior trade ministry official said in remarks published in Algiers .A Trade Ministry Central Director was quoted by a local daily newspaper as saying the figures applied to Algeria ’s imports of cereals, sugar, milk, coffee, edible oil and dried vegetables.
The prices of most staple commodities as well as fruits and green vegetables have skyrocketed, over the past few months on the Algerian national market, owing mostly to unbridled speculation practices.
The Algerian government has recently adopted a string of measures as part of an action plan to stabilize the soaring prices and to check the lingering speculation drive which mostly affects the poorest and most vulnerable sections of the population.
