Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika chaired a meeting on Sunday between ministers and military officials to examine the situation on southern and eastern borders along with Libya and Mali’s crises.

“His excellency, the President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika today Sunday September 21st held a meeting on the security situation on our southern and eastern borders. It also was about Algeria’s efforts for peace and stability in Mali and Libya,” said the President’s Office in a release.

“Senior civil, military and security senior officials attended the meeting along with Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal and the defense minister Ahmed Gaid Saleh,” it added.

This comes as the political and security crisis is escalating in Libya. That represents a threat on Algeria’s east-south borders. Presidential elections will be held in Tunisia in November while terror attacks are on the rise in its border areas with Algeria.

The release also said Algeria has hosted talks between Bamako’s government, political and military movements in the north to sign a peace accord on the Malian crisis.

Earlier last week, Algerian foreign minister Ramtane Lamamra announced that Algeria is ready to host talks between members involved in the Libyan crisis.
