Bouteflika: we want to reach consensual constitution
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika Monday broke silence about the constitutional amendment, saying his country will not run the risk of establishing a non-consensual constitution.
“Algeria uses necessary legal tools to meet international relations requirements,” said President Bouteflika in a letter read by his adviser Mohamed Ali Boughazi in a conference.
“Algeria made a quantitative leap by adopting a set of laws meant to improve electoral action and extend female representation in elected assemblies. This comes as Algeria believes that this choice is part of its comprehensive vision aiming at reinforcing the State’s institutional bases,” he added.
He also said Algeria is getting ready to amend its constitution and is preparing for that seriously. It is aware of mature ideas resulted from consultations.
In response to allegations that the president would have decided not to amend the Constitution, he said the State avoided to make quick decisions as it wants to reach a consensual constitution.
“Algeria suffered from terrorism. Because of that, we reject any adventure which often causes tragedy,” he said.
