Some media outlets have claimed over the past few days that veteran Italian coach Claudio Ranieri is a possible candidate for taking the helm of the Algerian national football team, by replacing Belgian George Leekens.

They explain what Ranieri already knows – some Algerian players like strikers Riad Mahrez and Islam Slimani – and the Algerian football fans are very respectful of him, following the legendary premier League triumph achieved by the latter with Leicester City last season.

They added that Claudio Ranieri is fluent in French, as he had coached the Monaco first-league team between 2012 and 2014.

Ranieri, aged 65, wants now to rest for a few months after being sacked by Leicester City in late February. He has reportedly rejected over the past few weeks  offers of work from the German team of Wolfsburg and Italy’s Palermo as well as from Chinese and UAE football clubs.

Claudio Ranieri is said to be looking forward to a new coaching experience in England. But, if he does not get a new coaching job at the English Premiership, he will then change direction to Spain or Italy. The British Times newspaper said to this effect in a report published on Wednesday.

Mr Kheireddine  Zetchi, who was elected President of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF)  on 20 March 2017, told the press that the new national squad’s head coach would be appointed within a time-frame of three weeks.
