French Minister of Agriculture Didier Guillaume said his country is closely monitoring the ongoing situation in Algeria, as a number of Algerians residing in several French cities began organizing demonstrations against the candidacy of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for a fifth term.

“France is closely following the situation unfolding in Algeria,” Mr. Didier Guillaume said in an interview with Europe 1 Radio on Sunday.

“We hold onto the sovereignty of the Algerian people. What is happening there is similar to what happened in some other countries such as Egypt and Tunisia”, he noted.
The French Minister of Agriculture thus commented on the situation now prevailing in Algeria, where President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is facing unprecedented street protests.
While the French government has remained rather discreet since the beginning of the large-scale protest movement that is currently jolting Algeria in the run-up to its presidential election on April 18, the French minister made it clear that “France wants to reaffirm the sovereignty of the Algerian people”.
“The Algerian people will choose.” “It is similar to what happened in other countries, notably in Tunisia or Egypt,” noted Didier Guillaume. “I’m not a commentator, I’m a political actor. A political actor tries to make analyses,” he added.
“President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will decide today Sunday, March 3rd, whether or not he is a candidate for the Algerian presidential election. According to this, there will be elections and the Algerian people will choose,” concluded Didier Guillaume, stressing the importance of “economic and trade relations” between France and Algeria. “We need this area to be peaceful, calm and quiet”.
Meanwhile, the French news magazine “Le Nouvel Observateur” wrote that the destabilizing of Algeria in the event of the death of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika or the outbreak of a revolution or rebellion there is the first concern of the Elysee Palace and the French security services.

Furthermore, a senior French official in early February said in response to a question about President Emmanuel Macron’s most important issue for the time being: Is it a new financial crisis, a massive electronic attack by the Russians or a US strike on Iran? He said: Quote: “The current nightmare of the President of the French Republic is Algeria!” Unquote.
