Doha Denies Algeria's Mediation In Qatar-Gulf Crisis
The only mediation that is currently in place to resolve the crisis in the Gulf region is the mediation of Emir of the State of Kuwait only, which means that Algeria’s reception for the two main parties, Doha and Abu Dhabi, is not a real mediation, Qatar’s Foreign Minister, Mohammed Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani, said.
The Qatari diplomat said in an interview with France 24 television on Thursday night, on the role of mediation in the Gulf crisis, which entered its fourth week; “There is one mediation is Kuwait’s, and there is help from allied and friendly countries. The United States and France played an active role in the crisis”.
Algeria reacted quickly with the developments in the Gulf, hours after Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain, declared that they cut off relationships with Qatar, and said in a statement that “It is following with great interest the deterioration of relationships between some Gulf countries and the region and its impact on the unity and solidarity of the Arab world”.
“Countries that are concerned with the Gulf crisis called for pursuing dialogue as the only way to resolve their differences, which can of course affect relationships between countries, as Algeria urged the need to uphold the principle of good neighborliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of States and respect for their national sovereignty in all circumstances.”
“Algeria remains confident that the current difficulties are circumstantial and that wisdom and conservatism will prevail in the end, especially that the real challenges to the functioning of Arab countries and peoples towards effective solidarity and real unity like terrorism.”
Last week, Foreign Minister, Abdelkader Messahel, met Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan Bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, who considered Algeria “a great country in the Arab world and can play a role in the Arab-Arab relationships, and described the Algerian position of what is happening as “honorable”.
On the same day, Messahel also met with the adviser to the Ministry of Presidential Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, Faris Al Mazrouei, and later with Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif.
Observers estimated that the movements of Algeria are “mediation”, although they are undeclared, but the new statements by the Qatari Foreign Minister confirm that what Algeria has done is “facilitating” the measures for Kuwaiti mediation and an attempt to understand what is happening in the Gulf region, and that it maintains “calm and stable” relationships with all parties to the crisis.
