Algerian education minister Nouria Benghebrid Ramoune said she is an Algerian Amazigh woman who became Arab and Muslim by Islam, in response to criticism about her origins which are said to be “Jewish.” “No one can give me a complex because I am not in the cabinet to hold a senior position but to accomplish a given mission,” she told Echorouk in an interview.

Within two days, about a half million candidates will set for the Baccalaureate exams. Is there anything new in this season?

Education system in Algeria acquired an experience in terms of final exams organization. Because of that, we can talk about clear mechanisms. Cheating cases will not take place anymore. No one can violate law.

So, you confirm that there will be no way to any cheating attempt.

In our society, we have got used to some behaviors such as favoritism. When you apply law, you will be hated. Because of that, I say there will be no favoritism. Practical measures were taken. The number of supervisors will be raised to three in each exams center.

Sometimes, the Baccalaureate results are said to have a political character. Will the same thing happen this year?

The Baccalaureate exam is the most important event for pupils. I commit to ensure that results will be real and anyone who worked hard will pass the exam in conformity to equality among all the candidates. There is no place for politics in the Baccalaureate.

You were member of an education reform commission. How do you assess the sector?

The commission prepared a report but it was not applied. Fears of reaction and results spoil reforms. There is no reform without resistance and real supervision. We need to work in accordance to international standards. A working team is working on that. A national conference will be held in July.

What are your priorities?

The three pillars of education are: school programs and books, training and supervision and governance. Reform without a model plan and supervision is useless. Improvement without training and professionalism is useless as well.  Reforms are complementary and coherent steps. We need to take in consideration teachers, unions and parents’ opinion.

Were you affected by reports about your Jewish origins?

I was not affected. No one can give me a complex.
