France: Islamophobic Attacks Increase By 53% In 2020
The National Observatory Against Islamophobia in France revealed that attacks against Muslims in this European country increased alarmingly during 2020 to reach 53% compared to 2019.
On Friday, French media quoted a statement by the head of the observatory, Abdellah Zakri, in which he confirmed that France witnessed 235 attacks on Muslims in 2020, compared to 154 in 2019.
The head of the observatory which belongs to the “French Council of Muslim Worship” (CFCM) confirmed that attacks on mosques increased 35%, compared to 2019.
The spokesman explained that most of the attacks took place in the Rhone-Alpes, Paca and Ile-de-France regions (greater Paris).
“Muslims are concerned about the negative view of the French towards Islam. There is no link between Islam and terrorism, and Muslims must be able to practice their religion, just like other followers of other religions in France”.
Earlier, a special committee in the French National Assembly approved the controversial bill on the “Principles for Promoting Respect for the Values of the Republic”, which was first known as “combating separatist Islam.”
The bill is expected to be presented to the French National Assembly next February.
France is one of the European countries that contain the largest Muslim community with about 5.7 million Muslims living there, which constitutes 8.8% of the total population, according to statistics of mid-2016.
