In an interview with a French football magazine, the current top scorer of the French first-league football championship Karim Benzema said he had opted to play for France after failing to receive an official notice to join the Algeria national line-up from the FAF Federation.

Benzema indicated, to this effect, that he had chosen to play for the French national football team after a call from French coach Raymond Domenech who gave him all assurances as to his footballing career.
The French player of Algerian origin said that he had been contacted by former national coach Jean-Michel Cavalli in 2007 but, given the indifference he suffered from, on the part of the Algerian sports officials, he preferred to wear the French colours for good.
However, Karim Benzema seized the opportunity of this interview with ”l’équipe” to reaffirm his strong attachment to Algeria and to her people stressing that he was immensely proud of his Algerian origin.
