French National Rally Party (NF), which is led by Marine Le Pen, called on Friday, Paris authorities to ban the Algerian flag and prevent the Algerian community from celebrating in the Champs-Elysées if the Desert Warriors (Algeria football team) will qualify for the final game of the Africa Cup of Nations.
A statement that was signed by the party’s deputy chairman, Jordan Bardella, said the Interior Minister should prevent fans from reaching the Champs-Elysées next Sunday and also prevent the raising of the Algerian flag in order to avoid a “national insult” to France on its National Day of July 14.
According to the same source, “Sunday’s bet is symbolic and it is unacceptable that the Champs-Elysées will become, hours after the military parade on the occasion of July 14, a place to raise the Algerian flag and a scene of gatherings of people who defend a foreign country.”
Next Sunday, the Algerian team will play against the Nigerian counterpart in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, and the Desert Warriors have qualified for this round after the departure of large masses of the community to celebrate in several French cities.
French media reported that thousands of people from the Algerian community went out to celebrate in several French cities, and recorded a traffic accident in the city of Montpellier, where a woman died and the streets of the Champs-Elysées were invaded by supporters.
