The Spanish National Police launched in-depth investigations into bribes received by its members and counterparts of the Moroccan police to facilitate the passage of “hundreds of Algerian illegal migrants”(Harraga) to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, surrounded by Spanish territory.

A special Spanish police unit has thus been investigating for several months a Spanish-Moroccan corruption scandal that reportedly allowed nearly a thousand Algerian immigrants in an irregular situation in 2018 and probably several hundred in previous years to enter Ceuta, the Spanish enclave located in Morocco, according to the Spanish media “El Confidential” on Saturday 12 January.

The figures are overwhelming, noted the Spanish media outlet. For the first time, the number of Algerian “Harraga” numbering (926) registered at the Centre for the Temporary Stay of Immigrants (CETI) in Ceuta in 2018 is comparable to that of all sub-Saharans combined that is (965).

At the end of December, the Algerians numbering (260) housed in the CETI were more numerous than all sub-Saharan Africans, added “El Confidential”.

Every year since 2011, more Algerians have entered the small town irregularly, but the hike recorded between 2017 and 2018 (+71%) is unprecedented, said the Spanish newspaper.
