“The Algerian parliament has appointed the speaker of the council of the nation Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president for a 90 day period,” it said. “Under the Algerian constitution, Bensalah will run the country until new presidential elections are held.”
The French news website “France Monde” said that the Algerian parliament met Tuesday, a week after the resignation of President Bouteflika, to launch a temporary stage, while “France 24” media outlet, referred to “the nomination of Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president for 90 days,” while focusing on the statement made by Mr. Bensalah who affirmed: “I will work to achieve the interests of the people, this is a great responsibility imposed on me by the Constitution.”
“The Algerian parliament approved on Tuesday the vacancy of the post of President of the Republic, following the completion of the quorum, declaring the Speaker of the National People’s Assembly, Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president of the country”, it added.
The newspaper “Arab East” said for its part: “the Algerian parliament appointed Abdelkader Bensalah as interim president,” while the website “Arab Independent” headlined with: “Abdelkader Bensalah, President of Algeria for 90 days,” adding that “this came in line with the implementation of Article 102 of the Constitution, as demanded by the Chief of Staff of the ANP Army urging to consider the vacancy of the post of President of the Republic because of Bouteflika’s very poor health.”
“The chairman of the National People’s Assembly, Abdelkader Bensalah, was appointed interim president for 90 days at a special meeting of the two houses of the Algerian parliament, a week after the resignation of the President of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika”, it said.
The website “BBC News”, announced the appointment by the Algerian parliament of Abdelkader Bensalah, saying that the latter will be at the helm of the country for ninety days, after the approval of the vacancy of the post of head of state, during an extraordinary session on Tuesday boycotted by the opposition parties after President Bouteflika resigned last week under enormous pressure from the street.
