Laylat al-Qadr: President Boutzeflika honors winners of the 7th International Contest for the Holy Quran Recitation

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika granted awards to the winners of the 7th edition of the International Contest for the recitation and chanting of the Holy Quran and the national contest of young readers of the Holy Quran, on the occasion of celebrating Laylat al-Qadr, known as the Night of Value, the Night of Decree or Night of Measures in the Muslim World.

  • The event took part in Algiers Grand Mosque on Sunday night, and the President Bouteflika rewarded the top three winners of the 7th International Contests of the holy Quran recitation. Candidates came from various countries of the world.
  •
  • The first prize of the International edition was awarded to Khouli Azouz from Algeria, the second to Abderahman Abdelghani from Libya and the third to Amar Belaid from Qatar.
  •
  • The prize of the national edition was awarded to Kamal Hasnaoui from Medea, east of Algiers, the second was granted to Aicha Nouichi of Mila, east of Algeria, and the third was given to Oussama Marha from Souk Ahras, east of Algeria.
  •
  • The president has also honored the jury who oversaw the 7th International Edition for Holy Quran Recitation.
  •
  • The ceremony ended with religious songs by the troupe “Al Aqsa” in the presence of senior state officials, members of government and diplomats from various Muslim countries in Algiers, as well as a large number of citizens.
  • Laylat Al-Qadr is the anniversary of the night that the Qur’an says it was revealed. Muslims generally believe that revelation of the Qur’an occurred in two phases, with the first phase being the revelation in its entirety on Laylat Al-Qadr and then the subsequent verse-by-verse revelation to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel (Jibril in Arabic).
  • Laylat al-Qadr is to be found in the last ten odd nights of Ramadan. There is no history in the Qur’an as to when the specific date is.Therefore in all the Islamic countries, the Layla al-Qadar is found to be on the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th night of Ramadan.
  • Qadr is most commonly translated into English as power, or wisdom, but there is no direct equivalent word in English.
