Mariane Le Pen, the president of France’s National Front

The president of France’s National Front Mariane Le Pen called on the French State to stop teaching immigrant children as the situation of their families is illegal. This provoked the education minister Nadjet Belkacem who criticized Le Pen for “ignoring the French Republic’s principles.”

Le Pen who runs for office told an opinion polling institute that “solidarity should be shown to French people. Foreigners who choose to settle in France legally should contribute in the education of their children.”

“France can not afford bearing expenses on immigrants anymore. It is time to stop granting privileges to illegal immigrants in terms of housing, health care and free education,” she added.

She criticized immigrants for laziness and relying on France, saying “immigrants are known for not having the will to work.”

France’s education minister Nadjet Belkacem denounced Le Pen’s remarks, saying that “they show its ignorance of the French Republic’s values and international agreements. Le Pen gives an evidence that she does not care for children’s terrible human conditions.”

“It is an honour for the French Republic to offer education for every child. Education is a right. Equality is one of the Republic’s principles in terms of public services including education,” she added.
