Moroccan parties to receive Algerian politicians to apologize for desecration of national flag

A delegation made up of several Algerian political party leaders and civil society members is slated to travel to Morocco next week in a bid to revitalize the dented relationship with the Moroccan political class.

The initiative stems from 10 Moroccan political parties including the Governing Justice and Development party and will consist in the raising of the Algerian flag at the Algerian consulate premises and the laying of a bunch of roses there, as a token of brotherhood and friendship between the two neighbouring countries.

The size of the Algerian delegation, which is still to be expanded in order to broaden the positive impact of such a get-together, is aimed mending the strained bilateral relations, driven downhill by the recent desecration of the Algerian national flag at Algeria’s General Consulate in the city of Casablanca by a group of ill-advised and reckless group of Moroccan demonstrators in a hostile reaction to President Bouteflika’s statement reiterating Algeria’s steadfast and principled position on western Sahara.

 For Algeria, this long-standing issue remains a pure decolonization issue as clearly stated by the United Nations in numerous relevant resolutions and in line with international legality.

During their upcoming encounter in Morocco, the two delegations will strive to transcend the current hurdles, which they blame on the rulers, and usher in a salutary dialogue for the benefit of the two brotherly peoples as part of the long-awaited achievement of a potent and united Arab Maghreb Union.
