On Wednesday, the National People’s Assembly (APN) announced the programming of a hearing for Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum and Delegate Minister Rachid Beldahane to discuss Algeria’s positions on current issues, a precedent in the  proceedings of the legislature that had not happened before.

According to a statement of the APN, “The Commission for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Community of the National People’s Assembly, chaired by Mr. Abdekader Abdelaoui, Chairman of the Commission, will convene on Monday 01 June 2020, at ten in the morning (10.00), a working session with both the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the  delegate minister in charge of the national community and the competencies abroad, with the aim of discussing current world issues.

This move by the APN’s Foreign Affairs Commission  is a precedent that Algeria has not witnessed, at least in the past few years, with the Foreign Minister  being convened to expound Algeria’s positions on current international issues, a tradition adopted by most of the world’s parliaments.

The ongoing tension in relations with France, as well as the escalating Libyan crisis, are likely to dominate the largest part of the parliament’s discussions with the two ministers charged with implementing Algeria’s foreign policy.
